Ethnic is an adjective that refers to the identity of groups and communities based on shared characteristics such as language, culture, history or geographic origin.

What makes it hot?

Ethnic can be hot when it is used to try to explain unacceptable behaviour by groups or gangs in a community, through suggesting it is their culture that produces this behaviour. So the idea of “ethnic rape gangs” is particularly hot, as it implies that individual young men from a particular ethnic background are engaging in violent sexual assaults on young women of different ethnicities, in order to demonstrate the power of their ethnicity over the other, and also as a consequence of their cultural background.
