Jihad is an Arabic word that means striving or effort in the service of God. It has often been erroneously translated as holy war against the non-believer. In fact, war is only one kind of Jihad. Muslims also use this term to describe the daily struggles to overcome temptation and the committing of sins.
The military jihad is the type most often heard about, as it can cause the death of innocent civilians and is, therefore, newsworthy. It is often described on television as the work of Muslim fundamentalists or zealots. Rarely mentioned are the root causes of their anger or what has prompted these people to kill innocent civilians.
