"New Australian" is a colloquial term referring to migrants.
The term was coined in the 1950s when it was initially used to refer to immigrants from continental Europe.
This term becomes hot when it is used in a derogatory, patronising or condescending manner to imply that migrants have less to contribute to the nation than those who were born in Australia. It becomes very hot when the term "New Australian" is used in a racist way and is applied only to people from backgrounds other than of Anglo-Celtic heritage.
