There has been a lot of angst about the incorporation of social justice principles into multiculturalism. There’s been the view that multiculturalism really ought to be about dances and celebrating a kind of superficial sense of diversity, rather than about getting some action in terms of justice and fairness and equality for people.
Now those latter principles have always been part of what we meant by multiculturalism but they haven’t always been emphasised.

We still have problems of discrimination, in some areas, against specific types, groups of people, who are from particular backgrounds. And of course, we still have to do more to try to actually bring together all the different elements of multiculturalism, in terms of the genuine respect of other cultures, rather than a kind of artificial respect.
