MALCOLM FRASER
Prime Minister, 1975-1983
I think in many ways that's a fault that you needed some institutional structures to make sure that the country didn't fall back into older ways. Well SBS has survived but the Institute (Australian Institute for Multicultural Affairs) hasn't. But if you want a job done, it's not a bad way to do it, that is to establish something by statute and then give it to a few responsible people and say go to it.

It was very useful I think having someone of Petro's (Georgiou) background on my own staff. He was born out here but with his own family background he could still relate to the issues much more readily than I ever could, for example, or other people in my office. And therefore he was a very useful linkman to the Galbally Inquiry, and also at times to other people in the communities. You know it was an invaluable role so far as I was concerned.
