I remember that (election) night waiting for the results and wanting to know that a Labor Government had been elected. We cried, we really cried of joy and thinking it's a new turn for Australia and it's a new turn for us immigrants.

In effect it had been very difficult up till then to even get migrants involved in politics or anything at all.
