PROFESSOR JERZY ZUBRZYCKI
Adviser to the Minister of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, 1968-86
How was cultural diversity expressed in the Whitlam years? In a very limited sense I think. Grassby was vocal and his impact I'm sure was quite considerable but not, I think, very understood by people at large and not really seen as something constructive. Nor was anything being done to remedy those barriers, to which we just referred, to remove the barriers that were in the system stopping people from experiencing upward social mobility. Grassby's own thinking about Family of the Nations was an important step but it was rather woolly.
CONTINUATION OF INTERVIEW AS TEXT
It did not address the philosophical issue of who we are going to become apart from being a Family of Nations. Nor did it address the major issue of handicaps to upward social mobility.
